 No.48: Cary Nord

Cary Nord quickly rose to prominence at Marvel in the late ‘90s on titles such as Shang Chi, Mutant X and Daredevil, as well as various projects at DC, before his feted tenure on Dark Horse’s revival of Conan the Barbarian with Kurt Busiek. His work on Daredevil and more importantly Conan showed that he had range, and could tailor his art to both gritty urbanism and sword and sorcery to a very high level while retaining his own artistic footprint. His work on Daredevil was both modern with some retro stylings, reminiscent of Mazzucchelli and Miller but with more simplicity and subtlety that focused on mood. Words: Andrew Colman

However it was his Eisner award winning work on Conan that cemented his reputation. With Marvel having dropped the character some years earlier, Dark Horse picked up the rights in 2003. An immediate hit, Nord’s painterly, illustrative art was a fluid take on Frank Frazetta’s version of the barbaric Cimmerian and was a revelation. Nord’s superb and dynamic storytelling matched Barry Smith’s, while emphasizing the otherworldliness of the Hyborean Age – the highlights of the series being his and Busiek’s interpretation of Robert E Howard’s originals such as the Frost Giant’s Daughter, The Tower of the Elephant and The God in the Bowl, as well as the beguiling tale of the naïve Conan’s enslavement by the world-weary and ruthless Hyperboreans. His art had a viscerally brutal (as one would expect with this character) yet elegantly defined sweep, his portrayal of Conan and his world cinematic, palpable and seemingly authentic. Nord would go on to other publishers and series, notably XO Manowar for Valiant, but he will always be remembered for his virtuoso effort on perhaps the best fantasy comic series of the last two decades.
