No.67 Bryan Hitch

Bryan Hitch is a British comic artist who started his career working for Marvel UK on books like Action Force and Death’s Head. Part of the long tradition of British comics, Hitch counts artists like Curt Swan and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez among his influences. Words: Joel Meadows…

Hitch’s first published work was for Action Force at Marvel UK which led him to collaborate with Simon Furman on the company’s Transformers and Death’s Head titles.

His work at Marvel UK got him noticed and he was hired by Marvel and DC where he worked on books like Sensational She-Hulk and Teen Titans. He worked on Wildstorm’s Stormwatch with writer Warren Ellis which led to the launch of related title The Authority where he also worked with writer Mark Millar.

His widescreen superheroic art won him fans throughout the industry and he drew a year of DC’s JLA with writer Mark Waid. He then jumped back to Marvel to work on their Ultimates, Ultimates 2 and Fantastic Four titles, working again with writer Mark Millar.

Hitch’s CV also includes working on the 2005 relaunch of the BBC’s Doctor Who series as concept artist and on 2009’s JJ Abrams Star Trek movie reboot.

In 2015 he returned to DC to work as writer and artist on their Justice League Of America series. In 2018, he joined DC’s Hawkman series as its artist with writer Robert Venditti. He also teamed up with Ellis one more time to pencil Batman: The Batman’s Grave in 2018.

Hitch’s lineage as an artist comes from fellow British comic illustrators like Alan Davis, Frank Hampson but also US artists like John Byrne, Neal Adams, George Perez and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez. He has a rare ability to compose comic pages that are dynamic and exciting but still easy to follow. Sometimes his work speed is a little bit of an issue but when you look at the detail in his work, it is easy to understand why his pages are so labour-intensive.

Hitch has influenced modern comic artists like Ivan Reis and Jimmy Cheung.
