No.73 JH Williams III

JH Williams III is an American comic artist whose sense of page design and composition marks him out as one of the artistic vanguard of the past twenty-five years. Words: Joel Meadows…

His early work included penciling Milestone Media miniseries Deathwish in the mid 1990s, drawing one of the issues of DC’s Starman spin-off The Shade and penciling the short-lived but acclaimed Chase series at DC.

It was his groundbreaking work on America’s Best Comics’ Promethea with writer Alan Moore which ran from 1999 to 2005 that really brought him to people’s attention.

After that he drew two issues of Grant Morrison’s epic Seven Soldier project at DC and began a long run on DC’s Detective Comics. In 2013 he collaborated with Neil Gaiman on The Sandman: Overture.

Most recently he has returned to comics, collaborating with his Batwoman writer W Haden Blackman on ambitious new Image Comics series Echolands, which launched this summer.

It is the intricacy of Williams’ linework and his attention to detail on his comic pages that marks him out as one of the most exceptional modern four-color illustrators. You can see the influence of fine artists and illustrators like Alphonse Mucha, Toulouse Lautrec, Gustav Klimt and Aubrey Beardsley in his work but he is also very much a comic artist at his core.
