Tripwire’s 101 Greatest Comic Artists Of All Time: No.68 Shawn Martinbrough
No.68 Shawn Martinbrough
African-American artist Shawn Martinbrough started his career with work for Marvel’s Epic line in the early 1990s.Influenced by the likes of Alex Toth, Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli, Martinbrough is a comic illustrator who trained at New York’s prestigious School of Visual Arts. Words: Joel Meadows…

Shawn’s first published work was as an illustrator for Marvel’s Clive Barker’s Hellraiser anthology series, published under their Epic imprint, which was followed by with the fully painted, Tales of the Marvels: Blockbuster, written by Mike Baron. Martinbrough transitioned to working in black and white when he was invited by Dwayne McDuffie to join Milestone Media. He began a long collaboration with artist John Paul Leon, inking Static and Shadow Cabinet in the 1990s.

The pair collaborated again on DC’s Challengers Of The Unknown in 1997 but it was the same year that the artist debuted as a penciller on the company’s Creeper series.

He followed this up as penciller on DC’s flagship Detective Comics with writer Greg Rucka.

The illustrator moved to Marvel after this well-regarded run to work on X-Men spin-off Morlocks with writer Geoff Johns but he came back to DC to illustrate Angeltown, a blaxploitation-style crime miniseries for Vertigo with writer Gary Phillips.
In 2009, he drew four issue limited series Luke Cage Noir back at Marvel and from 2012 to 2020, he was the artist on Image/ Skybound’s Thief of Thieves with British comic writer Andy Diggle.

Martinbrough’s clean lines and filmic approach to his drawing has won him many fans around the world and like his contemporaries Tommy Lee Edwards and John Paul Leon he brings a stark graphic sensibility to his illustrations. He is also as much at home creating cover pieces as he is drawing sequential work so he is a true all-rounder as an artist.
