No.88: Michael Golden

Michael Golden is a comic artist who began his career in the late 1970s at DC drawing Mister Miracle and Batman Family. He came to comics after a number of years working in commercial art and advertising. Words: Joel Meadows

Golden’s art matured dramatically with his work on Micronauts, which he collaborated with writer Bill Mantlo on its first 12 issues where he really made a splash as an artist. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Golden worked extensively at the House of Ideas on books like Doctor Strange, Howard The Duck magazine and Marvel Fanfare. He even co-created popular X-Men character Rogue with writer Chris Claremont in The Avengers Annual 10.

In the 1980s he went on to co-create and draw gritty war series The Nam, also at Marvel. The decade after, he was made an editor at DC and after that he returned to Marvel as its senior art director.

In the 2000s, Golden created covers at DC for titles like Nightwing, Superman: The Man Of Steel and Vigilante.

Golden is an artist who brings his advertising background very much to the fore with his graphic lines and dynamic composition. He was also influenced by the likes of early seventies comic mainstays Walter Simonson, Berni Wrightson and Mike Kaluta.

He debuted a style in American comics which can still be seen today in the work of more contemporary artists like Art Adams, Rick Leonardi and Chris Bachalo and despite the fact that we don’t see that much of his work these days, Golden was a figure who made a huge ripple in American comics with his distinctive linework and powerful figures.
