Harry Anderson may not be a familiar name to most comic fans – even those acquainted with Golden Age or pre-code books. Nevertheless for aficionados he was an artist who had a unique style that was amongst the best during his time at Atlas, the forerunner to Marvel Comics, during the early 1950s, and Quality Comics… Words: Andrew Colman…

Having attended the Grand Central School of Art, he began illustrating newspaper strips in 1939 before finding work at various workshop studios such as Chesler and Funnies Inc., providing material for Ace Periodicals and Hillman in a variety of genres. He then moved to Fawcett, primarily working on Bulletman and Captain Midnight. It was at the beginning of the 1950s where he produced his most memorable work for Atlas, his storytelling and covers for the company being highly sought after for their intensity and depth. His best work was mainly in the horror and action genres, his detailed and graphic art varying from visceral to subtle with ease. A shame he didn’t continue in comics, as when the code arrived he quietly left the industry never to return, hence his relative obscurity. Definitely worthy of investigation.
