Matt Reeves’ The Batman which introduced the world to a new Dark Knight in the shape of Robert Pattinson was released in cinemas eventually in March after a number of delays.

Director Matt Reeves is someone with an impressive CV that includes his reboot of Planet Of The Apes and the Cloverfield movies. The Batman was a very solid start to a new approach for DC’s Darkknight Detective and it grossed $771m internationally.

The Art Of The Batman is the latest Abrams art of movie book which offers readers a well-constructed and fascinating glimpse behind the scenes on Reeves’ blockbuster.

Opening with an introduction from Reeves himself which sets the tone for the book and also gives us an idea of the filmmaker’s approach to this very familiar big screen icon.

The book covers a lot of ground in terms of the film’s production with lots of concept art, concept drawings and even a look at the virtual reality that the production used to bring certain scenes to life. 

It even includes reproductions of panels from the Batman comics that the filmmakers used as inspiration for some of the scenes in The Batman. 

Reeves assembled a pretty peerless team here to bring his vision to life on the big screen and this book gives readers a fascinating look into the process they used. It offers insights from costume designer Glyn Dillon, whose CV also includes the recent run of Star Wars films, and his production designer James Chinlund, who is a regular collaborator with Reeves. We do get a sense that they wanted to offer us a big-screen Batman that was slightly different from what we have seen before while still remaining true to the character.

Abrams with their art of Star Wars books are always very accomplished at putting these sort of books together and The Art Of The Batman is a well-crafted and genuinely interesting look at Reeves’ film and the work carried out by his production team.
