Tripwire’s 101 Greatest Comic Artists Of All Time: No.55: Michael Zulli
No.55: Michael Zulli
Michael Zulli is an American comic artist who has brought fine art sensibilities to bear in his work with a career that began in the late 1980s. Words: Joel Meadows

Zulli’s debut was with The Puma Blues, a book that started in 1986 published by Dave Sim’s Aardvaark Vanaheim. This series which dealt with ecological issues got him noticed and led to work on Kevin Eastman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also drew a controversial never- published issue of DC’s Swamp Thing, written by Rick Veitch, where the character meets Jesus Christ. Zulli also drew Sweeney Todd, written by Neil Gaiman, which was intended to run in Steve Bissette’s Taboo anthology but the series ended before it saw the light of day.

It was his work on DC’s The Sandman #13, where he introduced character Hob Gadling, that really put him on the artistic map though. Zulli collaborated with writer Neil Gaiman again on the storyline The Wake, which wrapped up The Sandman series and again at Marvel on Alice Cooper’s The Last Temptation in 1994.He returned to the world of The Sandman, pencilling The Sandman Presents: Love Street with writer Peter Hogan in 2003.

Zulli brings the influence of artists like Aubrey Beardsley and Edmund du Lac to bear in his rococo ornate approach and his unique style won him plaudits and fans across the world.
Despite a relatively brief career in comics, his remarkably vivid work certainly left an impression.
