No.72 Eduardo Risso

Eduardo Risso is an Argentinian artist who started his career in his native Argentina back in 1981 working for morning newspaper La Nacion and magazines Eroticon and Satiricon published by Editorial Columba. Risso’s stark lines and deceptively simple storytelling have won him fans around the world. As well as working on 100 issues of 100 Bullets, Risso has collaborated with Azzarello on Batman story Broken City in Batman 620 to 625, a Batman serial in DC’s acclaimed Wednesday Comics and The Flashpoint: Batman Knight of Vengeance miniseries also at DC. The pair also worked together on Vertigo’s Spaceman miniseries and the 100 Bullets follow-up Brother Lono and on the Marvel Knights Wolverine miniseries Logan.

Risso also worked with J Michael Straczynski on DC’s Before Watchmen: Moloch two parter back in 2013 and with writer Paul Dini on the hard-hitting Dark Night: A True Batman Story graphic novel in 2016. He also created covers and interior art for DC’s Dark Knight: The Master Race in 2016.

Risso comes from a tradition of south American comic artists like Jose Munoz and Alberto Breccia but he is also influenced by the likes of Alex Toth and Hugo Pratt. His cinematic use of different perspectives on the page and his sweeping sense of drama and movement has meant that he has become one of the most in demand comic artists of the past twenty years in the US comics field. At one point his influence could be seen through other artists working in US comic series in the 2000s like Leonardo Manco, Alberto Ponticelli and Marcelo Frusin.

Risso has an instantly recognisable style which straddles European and South American comic art but is also influenced by American comic masters.
