Playing The Ultimate Game

A Game of Thrones is an indisputable publishing and pop culture phenomenon. The wildly popular fantasy series has sold over 90 million copies since the first book’s initial publication in 1996, and the acclaimed television adaptation ran for 8 seasons and generated acclaim, multiple spinoffs, and an undeniable place at the center of our culture. Now The Folio Society, independent publisher of beautifully illustrated hardback books, will publish the ultimate limited illustrated edition of A Game Of Thrones timed to its 30th anniversary: a single-volume edition which contains all of the original artwork by Jonathan Burton in a fantastic new presentation including a clamshell box, ‘dragon-leather’ binding, a rolled map, writer George R.R. Martin’s signature, and much more. Just 1,000 copies of the ultimate 30th anniversary illustrated edition of A GAME OF THRONES will be available on 14 July from the Folio Society…

“This volume is so stunning it could have been taken directly from the Citadel library itself,” said Folio Society Editor James Rose. “We have been incredibly fortunate to work with the finest British craftspeople on this special 30th anniversary version: from the leather makers who created our incredible dragonskin leather, to the James Cropper paper mill who made our bespoke endpapers, to Ludlow Bookbinders who are binding each volume with care. With a limitation page blocked in real gold, a rolled map and a stunning box — and each copy personally signed by George R. R. Martin himself — this is truly a limited edition worthy of the Iron Throne that absolutely every fan of the series needs in their library.”

The 872-page single-volume book is housed in a specially designed box with a blocked suedelux interior, a hidden map compartment, and a blocked exterior featuring hand-lettering by Stephen Raw. The map is made of linen and rolled to fit the compartment. The full text, accompanied by an introduction from Joe Abercrombie, is presented in an incredible volume bound in dragon-skin leather over chamfered boards with gilding on all three edges. Every copy is signed by George R. R. Martin on a limitation label blocked in real gold. Printed in 2-colours throughout, the book will also feature illustrations tipped within borders, hand-made endpapers with a bespoke watermark, leather head and tailbands, and a clamshell box featuring a blocked GoT symbol on the inside with gold and silver blocking on the outside.

The first book in the landmark series that redefined imaginative fiction and became a modern masterpiece, A Game of Thrones begins in a land where summers can last decades, winters can last a lifetime—and trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the North of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

A Game of Thrones joins an impressive list of seminal fantasy books published by The Folio Society, including Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story, Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle Collection, Madeline Miller’s Circe, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, and Ursula K. Le Guin’s beloved Books of Earthsea series.

The Folio Society 30th anniversary edition of A Game of Thrones will be available for £1,500 / $2,200 from 4pm UK time (11am EST, 8am PT) on July 14, 2026 exclusively from https://www.foliosociety.com/uk/a-game-of-thrones-limited-edition. ABOUT THE WRITER

George R. R. Martin is a celebrated author of fantasy, horror and science-fiction stories and novels. He began publishing short stories in science fiction and fantasy magazines in the early 1970s, and his first novel, Dying of the Light, was published in 1977. Martin went on to work as a television scriptwriter in the 1980s, before – discouraged by the limitations of the medium – he returned to writing fiction, beginning work on the epic fantasy series for which he is best known, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, inspired by medieval England’s Wars of the Roses. The first installment, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996; the fourth volume (A Feast for Crows, 2005; Folio 2021) and fifth volume (A Dance with Dragons, 2011; Folio 2022) earned Martin bestseller status. The winner of multiple Nebula and Hugo Awards, as well as the 2012 World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, Martin has also received three Emmy Awards for his work as a producer on the HBO adaptation of his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novels, Game of Thrones.
