Stranger Things Announces Prequel Series Coming
Back To The 1950s
Netflix just announced that 2028 will see a Stranger Things prequel, Other Worlds, and here’s a promo for it…
Stranger Things Day has arrived, bringing with it a new cause for celebration: A live-action spin-off from the Duffer Brothers and longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry is coming in 2028.
The prequel series Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is set in the 1950s, decades before the Stranger Things gang uncovered a supernatural conspiracy in their small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The new show also predates the events of the award-winning stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel’s troubled past in Hawkins in 1959.
“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” say Matt and Ross Duffer. “It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new … actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!”
Production on Other Worlds will take place in New Mexico.
Showrunner, co-creator, and writer Trefry, who also penned the script for The First Shadow, will executive produce alongside BAFTA and Golden Globe–winning director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Darkest Hour), who will direct the first three episodes.
“The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since,” says Trefry. “Now, it is my insane honor and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life alongside them and our incredible director, Joe Wright. With the support of Netflix and 21 Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again. There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.”
Additional executive producers include Matt and Ross Duffer via Upside Down Pictures, Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling, and Pavlina Hatoupis.
Levy welcomes the opportunity to continue the legacy of Stranger Things with this new story. “With Other Worlds, the Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefry craft a new ensemble and adventure that is imbued with the DNA of our flagship series while exploring a new era, setting, and all-new characters, themes, and mythology — the seeds of which may have been planted in Hawkins, but now venture into other worlds of spectacle, action, and emotion.”
“Today, on Stranger Things Day, we’re honored to partner again with Matt and Ross Duffer and Kate Trefry to give fans a new dimension of this universe to step into,” says Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series in the US and Canada.
Since debuting in 2016, Stranger Things has become a global phenomenon, garnering more than 1.2 billion views across Seasons 1–4. Seasons 4 and 5 are among Netflix’s most popular TV seasons of all time.
The world of Stranger Things has expanded to include new adventures and special experiences. That includes the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, which follows the Hawkins crew in the freezing winter of 1985 as they investigate new monsters and a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming.
Stranger Things: The Immersive Experience at Netflix House Philadelphia invites fans to become the hero of their own Stranger Things adventure, and Stranger Things: Face the Dark at Netflix House Dallas immerses guests in a theatrical walkthrough experience that’s full of tension, twists, terror, and thrills.
While you wait for the arrival of Other Worlds, revisit all five seasons of Stranger Things, streaming only on Netflix. And catch a showing of The First Shadow before the critically acclaimed production completes its run at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End on Dec. 27, and at the Marquis Theater on Broadway in New York City on Jan. 3, 2027.
