Sherlock Holmes And The Empire Builders Down And Out In London Is 87 Per Cent Funded
…But It Still Needs Just A Little Help To Hit Its Target
Sherlock Holmes And The Empire Builders Down And Out In London prose novella campaign has done fairly well but it just needs a little push to get it to its target with 9 days left to go…
After the huge success of Sherlock Holmes and The Empire Builders as two acclaimed graphic novels (Volume 1 and Volume 2), we thought it was time to offer something a little different.
This campaign will allow us to put this unique project out there. As well as a regular paperback, people will be able to grab a regular hardcover, a digital version and also a limited-edition handsome hardcover too.

Down and Out in London
World of the Empire Builders
Down and Out in London is the first prose novella set in the World of the Empire Builders. Holmes has lost his house in Baker Street and is now living homeless on the streets of London. So how does he restore his reputation as the world’s greatest detective? This is the perfect bridge between Conan Doyle’s work and the World of the Empire Builders.
“I am excited to get my first prose work to the readers. I have loved Sherlock Holmes since I was a child so here is an original 150-page prose novella which gives fans of the Empire Builders the opportunity to find out more about how Holmes found himself in his predicament at the beginning of the first graphic novel. It will be a fun and enjoyable ride.”
– Joel Meadows, Editor-in-Chief, Tripwire Magazine

A Tour of London
There will also be 10 unique photos of London taken by Joel Meadows scattered throughout the book.

Testing the Waters
The three comic shorts ran in Tripwire, which I am Editor-in-Chief of. They were very well-received, so we have published two graphic novels – or Volume 2 is being prepped with publication in June of this year.
Joel Meadows has worked as a journalist for many decades, covering the World of comics, film, TV and illustration, but Sherlock Holmes and The Empire Builders was the first comic series he had written.

What are People Saying About the Graphic Novels?
Don’t just take our word for it too as we have already garnered a lot of high-profile fans in the worlds of comics, film, TV and genre:
“When you think there is nothing more to be said or done with Sherlock Holmes, along come Meadows and Bennett to breathe fresh life into the great detective. Bravo! I’m thoroughly enjoying this original tale!”– Michael Moorcock, fantasy writing legend (Elric, Jerry Cornelius)
‘Drawing from the wonderful classic that is Sherlock Holmes, Joel Meadows and Tripwire have once again delivered an electrifying story in a dynamically driven comic spread’.– Richard Taylor, Wētā Workshop (Lord of the Rings films, Planet of the Apes)
“As a lifelong Sherlock Holmes devotee, I’m very happy to add this to my collection of the master of 221 B Baker streets adventures! Meadows and Bennet have accomplished a small (but important!) miracle in capturing the spirit and mystery of Conan Doyle’s Holmes in their great imagining in this new story with the eccentric and brilliant private consulting detective. Meadows has written a tale full of mystery and he draws you in with his mastery of the detective tale. Bennett’s art is just wonderful as it has all the atmosphere a Holmes tale would require and yet has a fresh approach and graphic charm that makes this an instant classic. If you love Holmes, you will love this, if you are new to Sherlock Holmes you could have no better introduction.”– Kelley Jones, artist, Batman, Dracula
“Holmes. Watson. Dark conspiracies. And, of course, mysteries to be solved. SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE EMPIRE builders promises to be an intriguing twist on the classic Doyle stories, in the hands of two enthusiastic and capable creators.”– J.M. DeMatteis, writer, Justice League International, Kraven’s Last Hunt
“The game is indeed afoot! It’s no small feat to take on the works of Conan Doyle, and yet Joel and Andy had done a neat job of it. Holmes feels quite like the Sherlock we know and love — except he’s found himself out of his element. Meanwhile, like every great heroic story, there’s a villain who… well, you’ll just have to read it for yourself. Gorgeous artwork by Andy that captures the mood and the spirit of Joel’s page turner. Enjoy it all!”– Jeph Loeb, writer of Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: The Last Halloween, Batman: Hush
“Joel Meadows and Andy Bennett have delivered a rare treat for fans of Sherlock Holmes – tantalizing new stories that stay true to the tone and aesthetic of the canon.”– Frank Quitely, Batman, All-Star Superman
“If you thought nothing new could be done with the Great Detective, check out Sherlock Holmes and The Empire Builders, a labour of love by Joel Meadows and Andy Bennett.”– Bryan Talbot, writer/artist Grandville, Luther Arkwright
