Graphic Novel Review: Batman: Harvest Breed
Batman: Harvest Breed, by George Pratt, DC Comics.
This 96 page original graphic novel was published in hardcover back in 2000 and it sees Batman battling with a killer who seems to have returned to wreak havoc on Gotham after six years away. The killer appears to be linked in some way to a Vietnam veteran and his adopted daughter and there is a supernatural element to the murders taking place in the city. Pratt is a very elegant artist but he is a decent storyteller so even though the art is painted here, you can still follow what is happening. It’s not as accomplished in terms of its writing as Pratt’s Enemy Ace graphic novel from 1990 but there are some nice touches and the organic approach that Pratt takes to his art actually suits this Batman tale. The story is a little bit over-familiar as Vietnam is a subject that has been pretty well mined in fiction over the past few decades but there’s still plenty to enjoy and admire here. We don’t get to see much in the way of sequential comic stories from Pratt these days and from the evidence of Harvest Breed, that is a shame. This is an atmospheric and gothic Batman tale that’s worth picking up.
