Blade Runner On Acid

Tripwire’s consulting editor Scott Braden takes a look at American Mythology’s Technofreak#1…

I am American and the first experience I had to the British Invasion of comicdom in the early 1980s was Eagle Comics, Brian Bolland and Judge Dredd. Style, science fiction, and a punk rock attitude propelled stories so far beyond what I was reading in the then-boring old vanilla super-hero comics of home. I get that same vibe today having read John Charles, Barry May, and Tom Newell’s TechnoFreak.

More Ridley Scott than Philip K. Dick, TechnoFreak from American Mythology Productions truly is “Blade Runner on acid.” It is sci-fi, it is film noir, and, of all things, it is most importantly as cinematic as comic books can get. Not widescreen, mind you, but blockbuster-level entertainment. Again, think Blade Runner. Think T2: Judgement Day. Think of the summer movie you always wanted to see . . . because it’s coming to bookstores and comic book shops in the dog days of August 2021.

An indie comic in the United Kingdom, and now finally available to the Colonies, TechnoFreak is set in London of 3026, the grimmest of futures that is home to Jon Sherlok. Sherlok has altered his consciousness via cybernetic implants, gifting the gumshoe with the ability to hack into any electronic system – but at a cost. Every time he deep dives into the digital, Sherlok can feel the edges of his humanity collapsing into cold oblivion.

If that is not enough to pick up this must-read, the American Mythology version of TechnoFreak #1 also comes with an all-new tale by acclaimed comics scribe Mike Carey. What does he have in store for fans? I’m not telling. Read it for yourself!

Also, according to Charles – who besides being a writer and artist of this fine comic also colors art for mine and Mike Malbrough’s cult-fave Kent Menace – when it comes to TechnoFreak, “It ain’t Marvel and it ain’t P.C.” That’s right, you know. TechnoFreak is sexy, seductive, and at times, silly – but in a good way. Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself.

And tell ‘em that that Yank writer Braden sent you!
