Prologue

The man called Bennett stepped over the broken door, further splintering the windows reinforced glass with his worn but expensive brogues as he raised his face to the rich azure blue above the towering office blocks of the finance district around him. A small dust devil formed a vortex of detritus beside the steps to the ‘tradesman’s entrance’ from which he had emerged, and breathing deeply of the hot breeze that found its way into the alley in which he stood he pulled a red silk kerchief from his overcoat pocket. He looked at his hands and the gore coated knife that he caressed like a lover, slick with fresh blood that had already begun to dry in the heat of the afternoon. Languidly he flicked the blade in a long arc, splattering the dry dust of the alley floor, before wrapping the kerchief around its length, proceeding to clean it, his hands and arms. Satisfied finally, he tossed the soaked kerchief to the alley where it slumped like a dead thing, and returned the blade to its sheath beneath the folds of his coat.
