TRIPWIRE: What was the genesis of Death Reign?
JOHN HOLLAND: The writer, John Holland and JTravis Smith, the artist have been working together for the last year, trying to find a project that they wanted to work on. Together they’ve come up with numerous ideas, some of which you will see in the backup stories for Death Reign: Gehenna, before they latched onto the idea for Death Reign. Travis came up with the art that is the first issue cover and the response was quick and positive from everyone that saw it. The two creators knew they had a great idea, so they fleshed it out and created the comic.
TW: What was it about the 1990s books that this series is a love letter to that connected with audiences ?
JH: The 90s was filled with so many great comics that it just seemed natural to try to capture that spirit. Travis loved the art style of Image Comics, but while we’re going for that vibe there was a lot more to the 90s than just Image. This was when Sandman came out. Hellboy. So many great and unique creations came from this period and while we are giving it that Image look and full of that 90s action we have created the world of Gehenna so we can do all sorts of stories.
TW: How did the creative team come together?
JH: JTravis was trying to create studio to work on comics and John answered the Facebook post. They bonded over their love of comics and have been creating for the last couple years. The cool thing besides just working together they’ve become good friends.

TW: What sort of perks can potential pledgers expect as part of the campaign?
JH: We’ve got variant covers, other comics, poster, stickers, original art, a chance to become a character in the next issue and be drawn in the comic, t-shirts, all sorts of goodies.

TW: What was the appeal of using crowdfunding rather than publishing through more traditional means?
JH: Kickstarter has become the go to place to fund your comic and get it published. The tradional publishing route can be so slow and frankly you can give up a lot of your rights and potential profits that we wanted to use Kickstarter. It gives us complete freedom and we can get the comic out to the backers a lot quicker.
