Farewell To A Truly Unique British Comics Writer

It’s been a pretty awful year for comics creators and the incredibly sad news reached us that 2000AD and Batman legend Alan Grant just passed away last night…

Alan Grant will always have a special place in our heart as he was the very first comics creator I interviewed when I was 16 years old at sixth form college. Alan Grant’s career began at DC Thomson in the early 1970s and also at IPC in London. He met his longtime friend and collaborator John Wagner when he moved back to Dundee. Grant wrote a strip for Starlord at IPC which got him noticed by 2000AD editor Kelvin Gosnell, who offered him an editorial role on the magazine.

Grant worked with Wagner on Judge Dredd but also on Strontium Dog and Robo-Hunter. They also co-wrote sci-fi series The Last American published by Epic and drawn by fellow 2000AD legend Mike McMahon. Grant wrote Judge Anderson for 2000AD on a number of occasions as well.

The pair worked together again at DC on Detective Comics with artist Norm Breyfogle. Wagner left but Grant continued to write it on his own for a number of years. Grant also popularised Lobo, a character which first appeared in DC’s Omega Men title, initially with artist Simon Bisley.

In recent years, Grant suffered with major health concerns although he did reteam with Wagner in 2016 on Rok Of The Reds, a Scottish independent comic published by BHP and drawn by Dan Cornwell.

Grant was a unique British talent and a man who always brought humour and warmth to all of his work. We here at Tripwire send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Here’s a few covers from a small selection of the titles he wrote or co-wrote
