Graphic Novel Review: Hellboy In Hell
Hellzapoppin!
Hellboy in Hell saw Mignola return to writing and drawing the character he created two decades ago. And taking nothing away from artist Duncan Fegredo, who did provide some inspired visuals for Mignola’s script while he drew the character, because Hellboy is so ingrained with Mignola’s sensibilities, it was great to see him return to illustrating him. Here Hellboy returns to Hell and we meet some of his family including two brothers, his uncle and there is even a reference to his father Azzael as well as discover a little more about his origin.
Visually, Hellboy in Hell is magnificent and Mignola’s depiction of Hell is restrained and rather low-key while still managing to convey the sense of gothic and menace that have become his trademarks. His sense of composition remains undiminished and with the help of colourist Dave Stewart, creates an atmosphere for the big red guy’s journey through Hell that very few other contemporary comic creators could achieve. He is setting things up for future Hellboy stories here but with his return to the series as artist, Mignola has shown that he is still a dynamic and unique comic powerhouse with more stories to tell…
