Brian Froud’s Goblins Review
Bringing the Fantastic to Life
Brian Froud’s Goblins, Abrams Books
First published ten years ago, this slightly updated version of Brian Froud and Ari Berk’s guide to Goblins showcases Froud’s brilliant fantasy art in a lovely durable hardcover. Approaching it like a field guide to goblins gives Froud the opportunity to show off the different styles of his art and it also makes it a more immersive experience for the reader. Froud really knows how to bring the world of the goblins to life with real style and panache and Berk’s text is funny and quirky, which considering his background in academia, is impressive. Brian Froud’s Goblins is a warm and funny celebration of the art of Brian Froud and reflects the continued fascination that people continue to have with faeries, goblins and other supernatural figures. People would have seen his work on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films and, along with Alan Lee, continues to be one of the finest living fantasy artists. There is a sense of fun here that can be lacking in other publications on the same subject so Brian Froud’s Goblins 10 1/2 Year Anniversary Edition is recommended for fans for his work.
