After the mixed reception of the JJ Abrams-helmed Star Wars films, it was Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian that raised the bar again for quality stories set in a galaxy far far away.

The second season of The Mandalorian which debuted at the end of 2020 built on the stories that show runners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni created in the first season.

Abrams’ Art Of Star Wars books are always an impressive affair and The Art Of Star Wars: The Mandalorian season two is no exception. With a foreword by Lucasfilm veteran Doug Chiang to set the scene here, Lucasfilm’s creative arts manager Phil Szostak takes us on a production journey and offers the reader an incisive glimpse into how the second season was crafted from genesis to execution.

As with every Star Wars project, the production artists are people at the top of their game. Artists like experienced Star Wars concept artist Ryan Church who acts as concept supervisor here, concept artist Brian Matyas who also worked to come up with some of the costumes here too and fellow concept supervisor Erik Tiemens all bring their best work here.

Reproduction as with all of the Abrams books is of a very high quality with full and double page spreads offering extra impact at strategic places throughout the book.

We even get a couple of scene storyboards reproduced here too.

For fans of the show, The Art Of Star Wars The Mandalorian season two is another well-written and cannily edited glimpse into a sci-fi series that continues to push the envelope for genre television run by creatives with a love of Star Wars and the worlds that the characters inhabit.
