Batman: Arkham Asylum (Deluxe Edition): Grant Morrison and Dave McKean (DC Comics)
Today it’s the turn of the 25th anniversary Deluxe Edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum, by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean, DC Comics.
Arkham Asylum was one of the biggest-selling comic books of its time when it came out back in 1989 and it is sensible that DC has continued to keep it in print.
For those people who haven’t read it, Batman gets trapped in Arkham Asylum and he has to keep his sanity while being immersed in the madness of his greatest, most dangerous adversaries like The Joker and Killer Croc. We also get to learn the history of the place and the background of the man who set it up, Amadeus Arkham.
The book has dated in places and some of the lettering is very hard to read but there’s no denying the power and ambition of Morrison’s prose and McKean’s disturbingly elegant visuals. As bonus features here, we get the script for the book and Morrison’s original proposal. McKean has done a wonderful job with the design here and it all holds together rather well.
For fans of Morrison, McKean and Batman, this durable hardcover version of what was a seminal project should be on their shelves…
