‘A DEVIL OF A COLLECTION’ GN Review – Hellboy In Hell and Other Stories: Mike Mignola (IDW Publishing)
Day fifteen of our graphic novel review a day here at Tripwire and today it’s Hellboy in Hell and other stories: Artist’s Edition by Mike Mignola, IDW Publishing.
This is the second Artist’s Edition I’ve reviewed here this month but it’s a little different to the Enemy Ace book. Hellboy in Hell was the return of Mignola to drawing his own creation after Duncan Fegredo took over for a few years. Here we have the five issues of Hellboy in Hell presented without its lettering and so we are able to enjoy it purely as art without its dialogue and story. Mignola has always been one of the most ingenious and visually appealing comic artists of the past twenty years and his art looks magnificent at the larger format.
You want to spend minutes gazing at some of the pages here and this is the perfect vehicle to do so. There are a few Hellboy stories complete with lettering here as well including The Corpse which is still brilliantly witty and funny, Hellboy’s appearance in John Byrne’s Next Men, and The Troll Witch. Hellboy in Hell is a worthy addition to the Artist’s Edition library and it is wonderful to see this in this luxurious oversized hardcover format…
