Face To Face Creative Portraits is a new photo book funding on Kickstarter currently. It’s an A4 lavish hardcover featuring portraits of comics and genre figures like Alan Moore, Guillermo del Toro, Dave Gibbons and more all taken by Tripwire editor-in-chief Joel Meadows. Here he is offering a few insights into his photographic process…

When I started Tripwire back in 1992, we didn’t know what we were doing. I would interview people and take some rather questionable photos in terms of quality with my analog camera (A disk if I remember). It took until 2007 when I bought my first DSLR when I began to get the quality of photos that I wanted to achieve.

For me, taking photos of interview subjects is like an extension of the interview process. There is usually an inherent rapport with the subject so that when I take their photo, that makes things a lot easier. Some of the photos in the Face To Face book were taken for the Insight book Masters of Comics published back in 2019, which was designed to offer readers an insight into the work space.

Some of the photos contained in the book were taken on the hoof at press roundtables where you have to think on your feet and very quickly as you only have a very short amount of time with the subject. Ironically this really helps to focus the mind and some of the photos I have taken in these pressurised environments like Andy Serkis are some of my best.

When I started to take photos, I didn’t really see myself as a photographer but now sometimes I am genuinely proud of what I shoot. Here’s a few earlier photos I took over the years just in case people might like to see my more primitive works.
