Suicide Squad tops $267 Million! Critics Changing Laws of Causality
Public Like “Bad” Films: Critics Deeply Miserable, Cultural Panic Ensues
♦ In the wake of voting for Brexit and Donald Trump, the public has once again socked it to the “elite”, in this case, film critics, by spending their hard earned wedge on Suicide Squad, took an amazing $267 million world-wide in its opening weekend, despite scoring only 27% on Rotten Tomatoes – worse than Batman vs Superman. Warner Bros. spent $175 million making the movie, so payback is going to be pretty fast done and then it’s a downstream ride on a river of gravy to Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Ambush Bug. One of those films is not really going to be made. Sadly it’s the one many of us would like to see.
In a sad article in The Guardian, an amusing attempt is made to reverse causality to suggest that this has been a sucky summer due to the reviews of critics, rather than due to films that suck, and dire predictions are made about the future of Suicide Squad. Let’s not forget the film is (even with marketing) probably in the black now, and would make a profit even if there were only DVD/Blu Ray/TV revenues to go. In reality the film will go on to make a substantial profit. In our new post-truth environment it will be argued, as with BvS, that it “should” have made much more, although making $872.7 million compared to Man of Steel’s $668 million looks pretty successful to me. I should make it clear I have no dog in this fight, BTW, I haven’t seen either film, nor am I likely to.
This shatters the previous record for August openings set by Guardians of the Galaxy, which earned a records-busting $161.7 million in 2014. So what message will Hollywood take from this? Well, that whatever comes out in August should feature a coalition of faintly annoying criminals/freedom fighters sort of thing, I’d imagine. So those of you with those type of comics – it’s MONEY TIME! Exactly how soon can that remake of the Dirty Dozen get going? When does GOP: The Movie start shooting?
