Merc Cuts Through The Competition On UK Film Chart and Cleans Up In US Too

Deadpool shot to the top of the UK box office last weekend with an opening of more than £13.7M, making it the best debut ever for a UK February release, beating the record previously held by Fifty Shades of Grey.

It also marks the second biggest debut for a Twentieth Century Fox title in the UK.

Released on 10th February 2016 and based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Cameron Saunders, Twentieth Century Fox’s UK Managing Director, commented: “We are thrilled with Deadpool’s opening weekend success. The response to our anti-hero has been staggering, especially in such a big year for superhero movies.  This fantastic result demonstrates the great appetite for Deadpool’s existing and newfound fans to see him on the big screen.”

The film is also doing impressive business in the US, having taken $152m there over their Presidents Day holiday weekend. It now holds the record for the biggest opening R-rated film in US cinema history.
