Nick Goode’s Sussex is a new spy comic and chapters one and two are live now on Kickstarter so here’s a few details…

Archie; an agent of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) is sent from London into occupied France as part of a Jedburgh operation to disrupt the German war machine. What awaits him is a test of mental fortitude, trust becomes the key to returning home. Sussex is a psychological thriller that explores mental health through the lens of a spy.

Hello there, I’m Nick (goodie182 Bluesky or Instagram) and I wrote Sussex. Around 2018 I was deep in a battle with anxiety and depression, I’ve struggled with anxiety from my early teens but the depression comes in bouts, I look back at those times as strange snapshots, they’re sort of moments where it’s hard to believe that I thought that way, felt that way or experienced it, to some extent it feels alien. I can recognise myself in those moments but it’s muddled. Sussex is my way of writing down all of my thoughts, and fears whilst trying to capture these snapshots through a fictional story. Sussex is not your traditional WW2 action story. It examines the psychological side of warfare with Archie looking back on his time in the war as snapshots, part of a puzzle he’s trying to piece together. It’s Memento meets Allied.

My previous writing credits include: The Red Wave, A Year and The Snow Universe.

Álvaro Molina (alvaro.molcres, Instagram) is the artist who brings this project to life, I knew when I was writing it that I wanted art which could reflect the cracks, and find details in the moments that I would otherwise miss. Álvaro not only captured all of my imagination and what I was reaching for on the page but he elevated it. What surprised me the most is his use of colour as you’ll see in the pages below, it’s vibrant. At times it feels like a magic hour, at others, it feels isolated or volatile.

For those of you who recognise the project, Sussex was originally on Kickstarter back in October 2023 with the wonderful folks at Foreign Press Comics, but that campaign was unfortunately unsuccessful. Álvaro and I have kept working on the book, it is very much a passion project for us so this time around, we present you with not just Chapter One but Chapter Two totalling 56 pages. This gives you wonderful readers half of the story as Sussex will be four chapters in total. It is printed in standard comic book size and saddle stitched with the wonderful Comic Printing UK. As part of the digital book, we’re including some behind-the-scenes tidbits.
