Goodbye To A Fantasy Master

The very sad news reached us yesterday that acclaimed fantasy illustrator and occasional comic cover artist Stephen Hickman has just passed away…

His friend Elaine Lee paid tribute to him on Facebook yesterday

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola also commented on Facebook at his passing

“Very sad to learn this morning that the great Stephen Hickman has died. I didn’t know him other than a few exchanges here on Facebook (see, it is good for something) but I always loved his work. A standout favorite has always been his cover for Manly Wade Wellman’s JOHN THE BALLADEER–”

Former Dark Horse vp of product development David Scroggy had this to say about his passing:

“RIP: Stephen Hickman

April 9, 1949 – July 16, 2021

Although I never met him, my sincere condolences to our many mutual friends. And to his many fans, who, like me, knew him as a master fantasy artist and weaver of dreams. May you find a safe harbor.”

Award-winning illustrator John Picacio had this to say on Twitter

RIP Stephen Hickman. Met him @ the ’05 Worldcon. Had just won my first Chesley Award. After the ceremony, he grabbed my shoulder & was one of the first to congratulate. Always remember that generosity.
