It’s the end of 2021 and here’s Tripwire’s top 10 graphic novels of the year with one choice a day from now until 1 January 2022…

3. Next up we have The Wrong Earth 2: Night And Day by Tom Peyer, Jamal Yaseem Igle and Juan Castro, AHOY Comics.

Like its predecessor from 2019 and its prequel published last year in 2020, The Wrong Earth : Night and Day is not a hoax or an imaginary story: Take one costumed crimefighter from a sunnier Earth than ours, as well as a darker knight from a grim and gritty version of our world. Now, imagine that they were switched. With that, you have the four-color epic of Dragonflyman and The Dragonfly, respectively, as these misplaced marauders from multiple worlds try to make their way on each one’s corresponding wrong earth.

There’s a lot to love about this tale of heroes and horrors. Take the masterful writing of Tom Peyer, whose stellar work reminds the reader of his incredible exploration of super-heroics in DC Comics’ Hourman. Then, there’s artist-extraordinaire Jamal Yaseem Igle, who readers will remember from his work on the critically acclaimed series Black and Molly Danger. As Igle dazzles the eye with his beautifully detailed storytelling, Peyer impresses with his dynamic characterisation. Together with embellisher par excellence Juan Castro, these three are a comic book dream team reunited and have created a series that is also a dream come true for longtime comics fans and new readers everywhere.

No spoilers in this review, but I will tell you that nothing much has changed since the end of the first Wrong Earth series. And everything has. Stinger and Lady Dragonflyman (formally the evil henchwoman with a heart of gold, Deuce) are naively following the pragmatic Dragonfly, while Stinger II is fighting Dragonflyman’s “Good Fight” with enough ammo to make the House of Ideas’ Punisher feel inadequate. Take that any way you want.

But, on the other hand, everything has changed. Let’s just say that there is something in the water on both Earth Alpha and Earth Omega – something that has to do with mirrors, mirrors, and more mirrors to everywhere. And is that Stinger II’s Earth Alpha counterpart pictured on the “Missing” label on the milk that Stinger is reaching for in the fridge?

Conundrums upon conundrums. The Wrong Earth: Night and Day is a question mark wrapped in an enigma – and it has me wanting more! I bet that it will do the same for you after your first visit to these new worlds of possibility. Emphasis on “worlds.”
