Tripwire Top 10 Graphic Novels Of 2021: Day Five

Documenting A Strange Time

It’s the end of 2021 and here’s Tripwire’s top 10 graphic novels of the year with one choice a day from now until 1 January 2022…

5. Next up we have The Plague’s The Thing by Roger Langridge, Hotel Fred Press.

Our fifth choice Is this hefty hardcover written and drawn by the brilliant Roger Langridge. Langridge is a New Zealand-born artist and writer who has been in the UK for decades now and he has a rare talent to boil down his concepts into just a single page. Anyone who has seen his Fred The Clown strips online and in the Tripwire print magazines knows that he is the master of the succinct strip.

The Plague’s The Thing reprints his single page strips that he originally created for his Patreon supporters online in a physical hardcover and they are amazing. Langridge manages to be funny, touching and heartfelt throughout, documenting some of 2019 and 2020 in comic format. He obviously didn’t realise that this would be an important record of such an important time in our modern history which is what makes this book feel so unique. Very few comic artists can capture humour in their art but Langridge is one of the finest practitioners working in modern comics today. The Plague’s The Thing is warm, amusing and incredibly well-observed. It would make a great late Christmas present too.
