‘MAN AND SUPERMAN’ GN Review – Superman For All Seasons: Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (DC Comics)

Day twenty-three of our GN review a day here at Tripwire (we missed yesterday) and it’s Superman For All Seasons, by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, DC Comics.

This hardcover reprints the four part series published by DC way back in 1998 and throws in a couple of short stories from Solo and Superman Batman. Loeb and Sale’s intention here was to give the reader a glimpse of Clark Kent’s life in Smallville and his early days in Metropolis and it is mostly a pretty effective portrayal. With nods to Norman Rockwell and classic Americana, we get to see a boy become a man and witness how Kent comes to terms with his powers and living in a big city rather than a small town. We see him go face to face with Lex Luthor and build up his rapport with Lois Lane.

My only criticism is that sometimes Sale draws Superman as rather a brutal-looking figure. But that aside, Superman for All Seasons is a heartfelt and respectful retelling of the early years of Superman and Clark Kent’s life with some really nice personal moments…
