Daredevil: The Devil Inside And Out
Daredevil: The Devil Inside Out by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudiano, Marvel Comics
Brubaker and Lark’s six part tour de force, detailing Matt Murdock’s transatlantic hunt for the people that framed him, is a timely bit of work which dovetails well with the moody chiaroscuro of the recent Netflix series. As always, Brubaker’s storytelling and dialogue are convincing and compulsive, his narrative seamlessly drawing the title character into the murky moral maze created by the dying Vanessa Fisk, wife of the Kingpin. Lark’s noirish artwork, inspired by Frank Miller, John Romita Jr., David Mazzucchelli and Sean Philips’ past efforts, gives the series a classic feel, bringing the exotic settings to life and providing a very comfortable aesthetic for the reader. Brubaker’s delineation of Vanessa Fisk’s machinations is deft and subtle, avoiding the usual binary hero/villain tropes, greying the relationship between the protagonists. Murdock’s reactions to Fisk’s ruthlessness and venality are well-observed, his unique powers exemplifying what is individual and separate about this blind super-hero. The supporting cast, featuring Tombstone amongst the antagonists, are all highly believable – no chasm of disbelief requires suspension here. The coda, when Murdock visits the Kingpin after his wife has died, also harks back to the classic storyline Born Again, although it is noticeably lower key. One of Marvel’s best books.

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for novice blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.

Dear Louie,
to be a good writer, you need to try and read as much as you can and you also need to read the writing of other writers you admire, and look at why their writing works.
