No.91: Fiona Staples
Fiona Staples is a Canadian comic artist who first got noticed through her work on the About Comics anthology 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights back in 2006. Her digital approach gives her an instantly distinctive feel as a comic illustrator. Words: Joel Meadows.…

Her anthology work led to her first series commission, Done To Death in 2006 with writer Andrew Foley for Markosia.

Staples drew a number of series for DC’s defunct Wildstorm imprint, The Secret History Of The Authority: Hawksmoor, North 40 and the Trick ‘R’ Treat adaptation of Michael Dougherty’s film.

It was with Saga for Image Comics written by popular writer Brian K Vaughan that brought her to people’s attention though. Her digital painted style really engaged with readers and this made Saga one of Image’s hottest books.

Staples also introduced a new look to Archie when she worked on the teen book with writer Mark Waid.

As an artist heavily influenced by animation as well as fantasy illustrators, she has brought a unique painterly style to bear to the world of comics. She is also a multi-Eisner awardwinning artist.
