Todd McFarlane Productions’ Spawn Universe Teen To Get Her Own Coming-of-Age Series In Misery This June
Looking To Forge Her Own Life
New Spawn Universe series Misery—written by award winning creator Todd McFarlane and illustrated by Szymon Kudrański (Blood Commandment)—is set to launch this June from Image Comics/Todd McFarlane Productions. This four issue miniseries will take readers on the compelling journey of teenager Cyan Fitzgerald, an iconic character who was first introduced in Spawn #3 and has been a part of the Spawn mythos ever since…
In Misery #1, Cyan is now a 17-year-old trying to forge a life of her own after the tragic loss of her mother, Wanda, whose character was the inspiration for Spawn’s existence in the first place. Now, as Cyan grapples with her grief and seeks to find her purpose, she discovers hidden powers emerging in her. A newfound gift—and curse—for ‘healing’ will force her to distance herself from those she loves most at a time when she needs their support.
Cyan will be forced to navigate the already tumultuous path of adolescence as her powers take her on a physical and emotional rollercoaster. The ability to ‘heal’ others comes at an unexpected cost—each touch unleashes the darkest memories and emotions of the person she touches, leaving Cyan to bear the weight of their suffering as her own.
“Having two daughters myself, I watch them both grow older, see them flourish and struggle, as they become young women,” said McFarlane. “To also try and imagine that they’ve lost their biggest supporter, their mom—it would have been so very impactful on their lives. This was the inspiration for the idea of this book; What if, at the most crucial time in a young person’s life, instead of embracing all that life has to offer, they instead had to shield themselves from society. What would that do to their maturing personalities? That’s what this book will explore while also bringing in a dark element of horror that will haunt the Cyan character.”
McFarlane’s compelling storytelling and Kudrański’s art vividly capture the emotional depth and darkness of Cyan’s world in this coming-of-age debut—sure to excite seasoned fans of the Spawn Universe, and newcomers alike.
Misery #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, June 5 for the low, introductory price of $2.99. The Final Order Cutoff deadline for comic shop retailers is Monday, May 13:
