Is Now The Perfect Time To Expand On Gladiator Franchise With Spinoffs?
Still Time To Be Entertained?
Since the recent release of Gladiator II, there has been a lot of speculation about how the franchise might expand from here. Now would be the perfect time to follow it up with more pictures or spinoff series.
Ridley Scott has already expressed an interest in creating a Gladiator III to complete the trilogy, but it would also be a great idea to supplement that with at least one spinoff series to attract a wider audience…
Broad Media Franchises Didn’t Exist When Gladiator Was Released
When Gladiator was first released in 2000, it was a blockbuster sensation that went on to have a lasting impact in the film and television industries in the years after its release. However, it existed as a standalone film at the time, with no spinoffs or sequels released until much later.
That’s because, around that time, the concept of developing massive media franchises didn’t exist in the same way as it does today. The likes of Marvel and Star Wars have completely changed the game, with their offerings spanning film, television, and games, and existing within their own interconnected universes. With Gladiator finally getting its long-awaited sequel in 2024, Paramount Pictures should consider expanding upon it and giving fans more action in Scott’s vision of Ancient Rome.
Roman Themes are Hugely Popular in the Mainstream
The incredible influence of the original Gladiator film supports the fact that some modern spinoffs of the latest chapter would be a success. In the decades since Gladiator’s release, there have been countless mainstream offerings with Roman themes. For example, there was HBO’s Rome in 2005, Spartacus on the Starz network from 2010 to 2013, and the recent Barbarians on Netflix.
In gaming, Roman themes have been hugely popular for years, with many online slots using imagery from that period to attract players. The popularity of this genre is highlighted by its use in the recent rise of Slingo games. There aren’t as many of these titles as there are in the slots market, but developers have already covered Roman themes with Slingo Centurion.
If a Gladiator II spinoff was released now, perhaps along with a game to market it to a more diverse demographic, it could be a huge success. Many modern viewers love to have a series to watch that takes them deeper into the universe of their favourite films.
What Would be the Best Focus of a Gladiator Television Spinoff?
The great thing about television spinoffs is that there’s the potential to cover anything from the original media in more detail. For example, the Star Wars series Andor only focused on a relatively minor character yet became one of the most beloved entries in the franchise.
A Gladiator spinoff could go in various directions. It might explore the backstory of one of the most popular characters, or send that character on an adventure of their own. Alternatively, it could move its focus away from the action of the arena and delve into the complex politics of the period.
There’s a strong argument for Paramount Pictures to double down on its Gladiator content now and release spinoffs and sequels. Roman themes are so popular in the mainstream that there’s likely to be a huge audience keen to see more content in Scott’s universe.
