WHERE IT ALL STARTED FROM…

From the minute the Mutiny: Black GIrl Magik project was put into production, we knew we needed to make it special.
Originally created to be the “First Lady” of FairSquare Comics’ magazine, also named Mutiny, our hero spun out off a conversation between Fabrice Sapolsky and artist extraordinaire ChrisCross. The first take on Miss Mutiny was very much superhero-ey and appeared on the cover of the now sold-out Mutiny Magazine#0 issue (launched on Kickstarter in 2021). Then, we thought: if she’s going to be our mascot, we need to feature her on every issue. And we started to order more illustrations starring Miss Mutiny. After ChrisCross, Karen S. Darboe (Blade), Marcus Williams (Tuskegee Heirs) and, of course, Alitha Martinez (Nubia), gave their own take on Mutiny. We loved Alitha’s “Kill Bill” homage cover so much that we made it our banner for every show we attended. And this is where the magic happened…

While Mutiny Magazine is beloved by readers around the world, the difficulty of sustaining a periodical while publishing new books meant hard choices. But with the character still front and center in our communication, hundreds of people came to our table all through 2022 and 2023 asking who this character was and when they could read her adventures in comics. Shocked by the demand, we started asking creators about developing the story. Our first pick was enthusiastic, but she could not commit to the project due to other engagements. Future looked gloomy for our hero.

Well… Then Kristal Adams, co-owner of FairSquare Comics stepped in to write Mutiny’s adventures. Standup comedian, storyteller and writer living in New York, Kristal is originally from Southern California, She was named one of 7 Black Female Comics to See Before they Blow Up by Madame Noire Magazine. She’s been a Consulting Producer for Legomasters, Netflix’s The Circle and Searching for Soul Food on Hulu. She has appeared in Season 2 of Laugh After Dark on Amazon Prime Video, JFL’s Straight Up, Stand Up series, Vidcon, SF Sketchfest and won Best of Fest at the 2019 Big Pine Comedy Festival. She’s been featured on Whohaha as part of their first ever Comedian Callout and in 2022 she recorded and released her debut album “Ain’t I a Wombat,” which received rave reviews and was featured on NPR, Ebony Magazine and Paste Magazine.
For MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK, she built a rich and complex world unlike any other.

On art, we hired another magician, Asiah Fulmore. Currently living in Columbia, SC, she holds a BFA in Visual Communication, from Winthrop University in South Carolina and since has been interning under comic book illustrator superstar, Sanford Greene (Bitter Root). Prior to working with FairSquare Comics, she has worked with DC comics, NBC Universal, Surfing Giant Studios, and Benedict College. Her previous work include Amethyst Princess of Gemworld,(DC Comics) and Family Time (Ablaze).

And to complete that team, we brought in editor Amanda Meadows, to co-edit the series with Fabrice. Amanda is an Eisner-nominated Senior Editor of comics, illustrated books, and prose. At Oni Press, she led editorial for Limerence Press, Oni’s imprint dedicated to sexual wellness, gender studies, and romance in fiction and non-fiction. She’s been a Senior Editor at Lion Forge Comics, co-publisher of the critically acclaimed indie humor press The Devastator, and a 2015 Publishers Weekly “Rising Star” Honoree. She can also be heard on the bad books podcast Dirt Cheap from Sony and Neon Hum Media.

In the back, holding the mic for these fabulous ladies to express their vision, is veteran comic book creator and editor Fabrice Sapolsky. Fabrice is Co-Owner/Publisher at FairSquare Comics and creator of five creator owned comics. He’s also the co-creator and co-writer of Spider-Man Noir for Marvel Comics. Though his career, Fabrice edited over 150 titles for various companies. He also provides a variant cover for Mutiny: Black Girl Magik#1.
