Marvel Studios Separate from Marvel Entertainment
Marvel’s film division is no longer under the oversight of Marvel Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In a move reportedly orchestrated by Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige, Marvel’s ultra-successful film division now reports directly to Walt Disney Studios and its chairman Alan Horn. The trade indicates that this was done to take Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter from the equation, whom an anonymous source said led to “several years of frustration” with Marvel Studios and Walt Disney. This new corporate structure reportedly took effect in late August.
“Marvel Studios is taking the next logical step in its integration with The Walt Disney Studios, joining Pixar and Lucasfilm in centralizing many of its film-related functions in Burbank, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito continuing to lead the Marvel Studios team reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn,” an unnamed Disney spokesperson informed THR.
“Everybody knows Ike is difficult,” explained one of THR‘s anonymous sources. “This has been a long time coming. Kevin has grown his entire career under Ike and now it just makes sense.”
Although the Marvel Studios’ brand extends to both film and television, the company’s Television department led by Jeph Loeb will remain under the oversight of Perlmutter, as will the animation, game and publishing operations.
