A Hard Hobbit To Break

On 8 May 2025, Warner Bros announced that Andy Serkis will be reprising his role as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, which is the first live-action Lord of the Rings movie since The Hobbit trilogy. 

The film is set to release on 17 December 2027, a year later than initially intended, and will explore the quest to find and apprehend Gollum, the creature who stole and was corrupted by the One Ring. 

So, if you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings, then here is everything you need to know about this upcoming film…

The Plot 

The film will take place 17 years after Bilbo’s birthday, after he gives the One Ring to Frodo,   and in the period of time before the hobbits leave the Shire in The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. 

The storyline will focus on Aragorn’s hunt for Gollum after he is enlisted by Gandalf to track the creature down before Gollum is captured by Sauron and reveals any information about the suspected One Ring’s whereabouts to Sauron’s dark forces. 

A trailer for the film is yet to be released, but fans may well get a teaser trailer soon now that there is an official release date. 

The Cast 

So far, the only officially confirmed cast member is Andy Serkis as Gollum. Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, did state that Gandalf and Frodo would be part of the film, but since there’s no confirmation from Warner Bros about the casting of these characters, there is a chance that Gandalf and Frodo (originally played by Elijah Wood) will be recast. 

The Filmmakers 

Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens (who wrote the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy) along with Arty Papageorgiou are writing the screenplay. Peter Jackson, who also co-wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will be producing it and Andy Serkis will be directing the film alongside starring in it.
