Bringing The Art Of Comics To A Beautiful Setting

The Lake Como Comic Art Festival returns for a fourth edition this May and it has another very impressive line-up of guests. Here’s one of them, Dan Brereton, talking about why he is attending this year and what is the appeal of it for him as an artist…

TRIPWIRE: What was the appeal for you of attending Lake Como Comic art festival as a guest?

DAN BRERETON: Beyond the obvious attraction of a comfortable/sized? Comic-art-driven event on the shores of Lake Como ? Offhand, I can’t think of any convention that seems more idyllic for a location, and as it will be my first visit to Italy, I’m anxious for any number of reasons.

TW: What are you looking forward to the most about appearing at the show?

DB: Meeting the attendees, talking with collectors and fans about the things they love about comics art. Connecting with people is always top of the list for any convention.

TW: Who are you looking forward to meeting at this year’s show?

DB: Aside from the attendees, there is an impressive almost intimidating list of masterful illustrators appearing at Lake Como I hope to meet and talk to, including Milo Manara, Serpieri, Mirka Andolfo, Gary Frank, Peach Momoko, and MANY more I’ve never met – as well as quite a few folks I’m looking forward to seeing you again and reconnecting with.

TW: What makes it different from other comic events and festivals?

DB: This one seems more intimate, a storybook setting for artists to gather with those who not only support the work but celebrate it. The fact that quite a few our dealers are bringing in talent to the show has made it kind of a Mecca for art collectors and aficionados.

TW: In this post-covid time, does this make Lake Como Comic art festival even more important and unique as a comic-art focused event?

DB: Considering that for two years I was delayed from coming because of Covid- first because the show was cancelled and then because I cancelled, yes, it’s important- One thing I’ve noticed in the last year of attending conventions is how much people seem to miss them and really needed them. We are finding our way back to a saner and safer time, I hope, so I expect the attendance this year to be higher than it’s ever been, with a lot of positive energy.
