This film, made in 1950 by director Frank Launder who, with Sidney Gilliat, went on to make the St Trinians films, is a bit of an oddity. Wetherby Pond is the headmaster of an all-boys school (Alistair Sim) who is forced to adapt when a girls school, headed by Muriel Whitchurch (played by Margaret Rutherford), is amalgamated into the boys school. The reason why St Trinians were brilliant was their sense of anarchy and the presence of George Cole as Flash Harry. The Happiest Days of Your Life is lifted by the presence of Sim and Rutherford but they are not enough to save what is a fairly dreary and dated comedy that lacks the edge of the St Trinians films that followed it. So an interesting curio for people interested in British cinema but nothing more…
