Top 10 Horror Comic Series for Halloween

Published

Since it was Halloween yesterday, Tripwire recommends its Top 10 horror comic series to give you a little bit of a shiver down your spine while you’re reading them…

  1. Hellboy
Created by Mike Mignola and published by Dark Horse, this demonic investigator has spawned two live-action films, animated movies and it’s a creation that Mignola continues to feel an affinity for even twenty years after the first story.
  2. Tomb of Dracula
A series that ran for nearly all of the 1970s at Marvel, written first by Gerry Conway and then Marv Wolfman and drawn by the late genius Gene Colan, Tomb of Dracula was a wonderfully gothic horror series and it also gave the world Blade, the vampire hunter who was brought to the big screen in three movies, played by Wesley Snipes.
  3. Swamp Thing
Created by Len Wein and Berni Wrightson in House of Secrets 92 back in 1971, Swamp Thing has survived several reboots at DC with its two best-regarded runs its initial one by Wein and Wrightson and the one in the 1980s by Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette and John Totleben.
  4. The Walking Dead
If a comic can be called a phenomena, then The Walking Dead has to be it. Created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, Image’s The Walking Dead has spawned a hugely successful TV series and a spin-off and the comic is still being published.
  5. Hellblazer
Beginning life as a Sting clone in Swamp Thing#37, John Constantine went on to star in 300 issues and countless oneshots and graphic novels of Hellblazer and the character has been swallowed back into the main DC Universe. 2014 saw a Constantine TV series and even though it was cancelled after one season, he is guest-starring in WB’s hit Arrow series. The series saw some of the best comic writers in the business like Garth Ennis, Mike Carey, Jamie Delano (who fleshed out the character) and Peter Milligan guide his destiny.
  6. Lucifer
Lucifer began as a spin-off from Vertigo’s Sandman but thanks to its writer Mike Carey and artist Peter Gross, it eclipsed its progenitor. Running for six years, it made Carey and Gross’s name in comics, exploring supernatural themes in an intelligent and literate manner.
  7. American Vampire
American Vampire had the benefit of one of the world’s most well-known horror writers, Stephen King, giving it a boost at its start but since then, this twist on the vampire legend, by writer Scott Snyder and artist Rafael Albuquerque, with assistance from a few other artists, has gone from strength to strength.
  8. Preacher
After a run on Vertigo’s Hellblazer, Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon raised the bar with this supernatural tale of a Texas preacher, possessed by a creation from heaven. After years of discussion and false starts, it is even going to join The Walking Dead on television on AMC.
  9. From Hell
Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s sprawling epic Jack The Ripper tale still has the power to unsettle its reader. Arguably still one of Moore’s most ambitious works.
  10. 30 Days of Night
Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith’s horror comic, published by IDW, spawned two films and countless comic sequels. It was an atmospheric and creepy comic thanks to Niles’s writing and Templesmith’s distinctive art.
