♦Our friends at Variety have news of Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently coming to BBC America
BBC America has signed on for a live-action television series based on Douglas Adams’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency prose novels, according to Variety. Max Landis is writing the eight-episode first season, and co-producing alongside IDW Entertainment, Circle of Confusion, Ideate Media and AMC Studios.
”Dirk Gently is a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else,” said BBC America president Sarah Barnett. “The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis’ brilliant and audacious take on this material we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBCA super-fans.”
IDW Publishing launched a comic book series, Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, in May 2015. Variety says that IDW will relaunch the series in the wake of the TV deal, with former Doctor Who showrunner Arvind Ethan David, who helped bring Dirk Gently to television, writing.

According to the Hollywood trade paper, BBC America intends the Dirk Gently television series to be a companion piece to the long-running Doctor Who series that it shows. This wouldn’t be the BBC’s first attempt at a Dirk Gently series, however; BBC aired a four episodes of a live-action series in 2010 and 2012. Although generally well-received, BBC cancelled the show citing overall budget cuts.
No details on casting or a production schedule for the new television series was announced.
