With an estimated value in excess of £100,000, The McCulloch Davies Collection reflects a lifetime of connoisseurship. Enjoyed by the collector and shared with his children and grandchildren, the books remain in exceptional condition. On learning the collection’s value, the family were astonished; his grandson Rueben noted he was pleased they had “saved the collection from finding its way into a charity jumble sale some years ago.”

More than 300 books will be offered at live auction from Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s flagship in central London, with Silver Age highlights including Tales of Suspense #39, Journey Into Mystery #83 and #85, and The Amazing Spider-Man #1, spanning the origins of Iron Man, Thor and Loki.

The sale presents investors and collectors with a rare opportunity to acquire blue-chip keys in exemplary condition from one of the largest single-owner collections to emerge in the UK.

November and December auctions will also feature the first selections from a multi-million-pound private archive of more than 100,000 books, ranking among the most comprehensive ever offered in Europe and featuring landmark issues and key first appearances in exceptional condition.

The collection includes rare and possibly unique issues, including crime and pre-code horror, infamous for its controversial and graphic content. A far cry from from modern day Marvel and DC. For some of these issues, it will be the first time they have ever been offered to market, and significant interest is anticipated.

For many collectors, the centrepiece will be multiple copies of Amazing Fantasy #15 from 1962, the origin of Spider-Man and one of the most recognisable comic books of the twentieth century. The catalogue also features first appearances of Thor, Loki and the Fantastic Four, alongside carefully curated runs and single issues presented in investment-grade condition. The combined value of the opening auctions is anticipated to be around £500,000, with further consignments from the multi-million-pound collection to follow.

Auctions commenced on 1 November, followed by 27 November and 5th December.
