Small Press Day Returns On Saturday, 17 August For Its Ninth Year Celebrating Comics Self-publishing Across The UK And Ireland

There’s just over a week to go! Small Press Day, the UK and Ireland’s annual celebration of small press comics and zines, returns for 2024 on Saturday, August 17th, marking the ninth year of this now-integral part of the UK indie comics calendar…
Founded in 2016 by Private Eye cartoonist David Ziggy Greene (Jam Bookshop) the event aims to spotlight the possibilities of small press comics publishing and to introduce its practitioners to the far wider audiences they deserve by fostering stronger connections between shops, creators and readers.
Each year comic stores arrange signings, panels, workshops and small fairs giving self-published comics artists their own day of visibility. This year’s Small Press Day is again being co-organised by the team of Amneet Johal (Alternative Press) and Andy Oliver (Broken Frontier), with Ellie Egleton (Power Punch Boot Camp) joining the crew for 2024.
“Small Press Day has become something of an institution within the UK comics community,” says Andy Oliver, “an opportunity to celebrate both emerging comics talent and the mainstays of our vibrant self-publishing scene.”
Will Humberstone of the acclaimed London indie comics shop Gosh! Comics describes Small Press Day as a chance “to discover incredible new talent, support independent creators and welcome aspiring artists to the loving community.”
With multiple events being held every year in shops and spaces across the UK and Ireland, 2024 will also include another round of one-to-one Broken Frontier Zoom appointments where early career stage comics creators can chat with Andy Oliver about their work, raising their profiles, and routes into publishing. This will be held on Sunday, August 18th.
