The DC: Dawn of Super Heroes exhibition currently happening at the O2 offers something between an overview and a whistle-stop chronology of all things connected with the publisher – there are timelines explaining the development of the company in the late 1930s and early 1940s, that chart its meteoric rise to supremacy in the nascent industry, coupled with endless breath-taking exhibits focusing on all facets of their media profile.

Although the exhibition doesn’t provide that much depth regarding its subject (its curator correctly opting to not be too dry with his subject), it is unsurpassed in its true remit – bringing an immersive experience of the publisher’s history. It’s a satisfyingly ambitious effort, that should please both the novice and dedicated aficionado – there are countless original art pages, some of them featuring key moments in the eighty year canon of its roster of super-characters, along with cartoon displays, video interviews, costume and model exhibits, and life-size replicas.

There is certainly enough prime Superman and Batman memorabilia here to overwhelm the most jaded of comic vets, along with sections devoted to Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, the JLA, Suicide Squad, and so on. The key here is scale and the ease of interaction with all the iconic imagery. A four colour feast for the eyes that evokes both nostalgia as well as providing analysis of the company’s current standing in the movie industry, the emphasis is on fun and entertainment, and there is certainly a lot of it – perhaps as much as there has ever been under one roof.
