Focusing On The Ultimates

Bloomsbury Academic has just announced a new addition to its line of academic books on Marvel Comics’ history…

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Marvel Comics entered a period of experimentation that included the Marvel Knights line and introduced new creators such as filmmaker Kevin Smith. But it was the Marvel Ultimate line, launched in 2000, that would have a lasting impact on the Marvel Universe and the broader pop culture landscape. With The Ultimates, Ted Adams examines what made the launch of the Marvel Ultimate line so successful and how creators updated characters for modern readers.

Under the title The Ultimates, writer Mark Millar and artist Bryan Hitch didn’t just reboot The Avengers, they reimagined how superhero stories could be told for a 21st century audience. Together they grounded the story in the real world, creating an all-new look for The Avengers and complicating and modernising the characters.

Since the beginning, Marvel artists have created and maintained a universe where the continuity between comics is an essential part of the storytelling, so it was no small thing when 40 years later, Marvel Comics decided to create an entry point for new readers with the Ultimate line, one that traded the traditional backstory for a self-contained 21st century context.

Millar and Hitch’s heroes were recognised as celebrities, often mingling with real-world entertainers and politicians. They were also part of the answer to the question of how super hero stories could be told in a post-9/11 world. It’s this combination of real-world people and events combined with fictional characters and situations that makes these powerful and fantastic stories resonate with audiences.

As Adams writes, “It’s no exaggeration to say The Ultimates changed Marvel comics forever.”

Ted Adams is the founder of IDW Publishing, where he was CEO and Publisher for 20 years, negotiating deals to publish Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, and many more. Under his leadership, the company won dozens of industry awards, including many Eisner and Harvey Awards. He was publisher of a line of Marvel comics aimed at kids and the prestigious Artist’s Edition line, which included many classic Marvel titles. Ted Adams is based out of San Diego, USA.
