What can the audience expect from Seven Kings Must Die?

I think what the audience can always expect from The Last Kingdom, be it the special or any of the seasons before, is that each and every member of this show, of this cast, will always give their utmost attention to the detail of the character, attention to the story and do everything we can to connect with the fans so that we really have an impact. They can always expect that we’re going to do the best job we can to tell them the stories that they want to hear. You might feel that we are even closer together, and I hope that that brotherhood, even more than before, will permeate the screens this time.

How has it been reuniting with The Last Kingdom family?

Every time I see these people it’s really emotional because they’re really important figures in my life that have affected who I am and the way I changed, and how I see other relationships. I really love these guys and it’s a blessing to be reunited with them one more time.

What are the main themes of Seven Kings Must Die?

I think the main themes of this show are about loyalty, about virtue. I think it’s a lot about knowing that no one is perfect, and everybody makes mistakes, and the ability to acknowledge those mistakes and not have them define them. I think it’s about leadership, what good leadership is and that it’s not a one‐person game. That leadership is a joint effort. I think it’s about love and being torn. It’s always about some sort of paternal journey and a maternal journey. It’s about brothers and love.

Why do fans love The Last Kingdom so much?

From our side I think it’s because we always give the utmost respect and attention to the job and to the part our characters play in the story. I think the audience sees that. I think the audience can also see the generosity and camaraderie amongst the actors. The writers are telling a great story inspired by the books, and it is a beautiful story. With Alex we have an amazing lead and people keep coming back to that, and we always emphasise that this show is completely impossible without those dedicated fans. We love our jobs and we love the fans and we love that they care.

What does working on The Last Kingdom mean to you?

Well, working on The Last Kingdom is for me, if anything, a university. It’s my sixth year. It has sort of shaped my adult life and where I am now. It changed my understanding of the 18 world. It gave me a lifestyle that I maybe didn’t have before, so I’m grateful for that. It gave me a group of people that I will check in on until the day I die. It taught me assertiveness. It taught me that every component of this story, every little cog in this massive machine of the story, is vital and that it cannot work if you take one part out of it. I guess loyalty, destiny, and just doing your work. There’s a lot of things, I could keep going!
