Celebrating Comics History

Ahead of the  Harvey Awards announced at New York Comic Con the weekend after next, they have just confirmed who’s going to be inducted into their Hall Of Fame this year…

John Byrne

an artist/writer who burst onto the scene in the 1970s and reinvented high-profile characters including the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Superman. Byrne has been less active in comics more recently, but he has a new X-Men graphic novel slated for release by Abrams sometime next year.

Peter David, a prolific “writer of stuff” for Marvel (The Incredible Hulk), DC (Young Justice, Aquaman) and a number of other publishers, along with a series of Star Trek novels and a run on DC’s Star Trek series too. He died earlier this year after a long period of poor health.

Patrick McDonnell, best known for the long-running comic strip Mutts, and author of the Marvel graphic novel The Super-Hero’s Journey (Abrams).

Wendy and Richard Pini, writer/artist and publisher, respectively, of Elfquest, one of the first and most successful independently published comics, which started in the 1970s and has continued through the present day.

Barbara Shermund, one of the first women cartoonists for the New Yorker, whose work defined a certain pre-World War II aesthetic and has recently been rediscovered by comics historians.

The Harvey Awards are one of the comic industry’s oldest and most prestigious awards. Recognizing outstanding achievement in multiple categories, the Harvey’s have been a fixture of the comic industry since 1988. This year, the Harvey Awards returns to New York Comic Con – the largest pop culture gathering in the United States.

Spotlighting comic books, graphic novels, manga and more, the Harvey’s are industry awards selected by a full body of comic and publishing professionals.

The Harvey Awards are an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the best & brightest, helping new readers, current fans, booksellers, retailers and librarians distinguish the best comics of the year as voted on by their peers.
