Skydance Media has owned the rights to the Terminator franchise for some time, and the production company produced Terminator Genisys in 2015 and Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019. There haven’t been any more pictures in the sci-fi series since then, but the company can make them if it chooses to do so.

The merger between Skydance and Paramount is set to be official in July 2025, meaning that a lot of the former’s content could soon flood Paramount+. This could also potentially lead to new Terminator content being made for the streaming service…

Skydance Media and Paramount Set to Officially Merge

The $8 billion merger between Skydance Media and Paramount was announced in 2024, and it’s officially set to go through in July. The new company will be known as Paramount Skydance Corporation, and a massive part of the plan is to enhance Paramount+’s streaming options.

There’s currently fierce competition between the main streaming services, and this move could massively boost Paramount+’s chances of competing with the well-established giants. Amazon recently acquired the rights to the MGM catalogue and plans to produce new content for some of its main IPs in the coming years. The same thing could happen on Paramount+ with many of Skydance Media’s offerings, such as Jack Ryan, The Old Guard, and Terminator.

Terminator Movies and Series Could Boost Platform

The Terminator franchise is an ideal option to expand on a streaming service, as it would lend itself well to interconnected series and movies. This could be a prime opportunity to reboot the sci-fi offering and tell a new story completely from scratch for modern audiences.

There’s huge potential for this to go in different directions. For example, the movies could follow the same structure as James Cameron’s first two beloved offerings, paying homage to them while offering something slightly new. Then, a couple of spinoff series could expand the universe more. They could perhaps go into more detail about the war with Skynet and how the machines managed to take over in the first place. This would be relatable to modern viewers, with AI now becoming highly advanced and mainstream robots on the horizon in the real world.

Franchise Remains Popular Despite Some Weak Sequels

Even though some of the sequels have been met with negative reviews and lack of success at the box office, the Terminator franchise is still hugely popular in the mainstream. The legacy of Cameron’s early films lives on in a variety of media, with many popular games based on those first pictures.
