One of the most significant draws to Disney+ is its vast array of great films. And, believe it or not, there are some excellent sports movies that are more than worth a watch…

Miracle

Most people will have heard the story of when the US Olympic Hockey team upset the odds in 1980 by defeating the Soviet Union. It was declared a miracle, so the name of the movie that tells depicts the story is quite fitting. Sports films have always been highly successful and a relatively safe bet when considering the growing business that is being experienced by long-standing and trusted sportsbetting operators, who of which would not have given the US Olympic Hockey team any chance of winning against the Soviets because it was their game and they were deemed unbeatable.

Remember The Titans

Remember The Titans isn’t just a sports film. It’s a movie that tells the story of racial integration and the challenges that can present themselves as a result. In 1971, a high school football team in Virginia is in a position where it must racially integrate, which leads to a lot of in-fighting and clashes between teammates. However, when everyone starts working together, not just as teammates, but more like a band of brothers, they realise how much more beneficial it is, and how powerful they are when working as a unit for the same cause.

Glory Road

Glory Road is another great movie that explores race in more detail. The 1966 Texas Western college basketball team make it all the way to becoming national champions. The team is made up of seven African-Americans, but at the same time, Kentucky, the best team in the country, have a team made up entirely of white players. So, the championship game that sees the two teams face off is very interesting from a racial standpoint. You could say that the outcome is a battle between old school and new school to determine just which team is the best in the country.

Cool Runnings

In terms of films in general, Cool Runnings often appears in most people’s top tens. So, it’s great news that it’s available to stream on-demand on Disney+ right now. We expect most people will already know, but if they don’t, Cool Runnings documents the story of the Jamaican bobsled team making it all the way to the 1988 Winter Olympics. On arrival, there wasn’t really that respect there for the Jamaican bobsled team. But, by the end, they are seen as equals by many, which shows you just how much things have changed over a very short space of time. What adds to this movie being on Dinesy+ is that they use actual footage from the final race, which includes a horrible crash.
