In ten years, Mad Cave Studios have managed to navigate the choppy waves of the comics industry. In their anniversary year, the company have announced a number of licensed series. First out of the gate is Dick Tracy by writers Alex Segura and Michael Moreci and artist Geraldo Borges.
The variant cover by Dan Panosian is a wonderfully evocative statement of intent for the series, moody and eyecatching.
Writers Alex Segura and Michael Moreci have an interesting pedigree. Segura switched from working in comics PR for DC to a career writing detective novels featuring his creation Pete Fernandez and comics like Black Ghost as well as acclaimed novels like Secret Identity, while Moreci has made his name writing books like Barbaric for Vault and Stranger Things for Dark Knight. The pair manage to infuse the story with humour and action, creating a tale which is accessible for readers who are unfamiliar with Tracy’s history while still of interest to his longtime fans. The writers manage to pack a lot of story into just 22 pages. Artist Borges, best known before this for his work at Marvel on books like Thunderbolts and Morbius, has a very clean line, an expressive approach to characters and faces and an eye for action, moving proceedings along with style and panache.

Dick Tracy#1 captures the spirit of Chester Gould’s classic newspaper strip while bringing something fresh and new to the series. Writers Segura and Moreci are the perfect choice here while artist Geraldo Borges is a wonderful foil for their script.

The first issue is an auspicious start which bodes well for the rest of the series. Mad Cave have set their stall out for their anniversary year and this is a thrilling opener to the book.
Dick Tracy#1 ships from Mad Cave Studios on 24 April.
